They chose not to enforce the follow–on and declared their second innings closed on 276–7, leaving New Zealand needing an unlikely 540 to win. They managed only 167, losing by 372 – India's biggest ever win in terms of runs.
Patel took four of the seven wickets that fell in India's second innings, at a cost of 106 runs, to finish with match figures of 14–225. He scored 0 not out in both of New Zealand's innings – facing only one ball in the first and five in the second.
